SA CUP #1
Its been a long weekend as I had to leave school on the Wednesday for the SA cup #1 in durbanville, Cape Town.
This race was very important as it was used as part of the selection for the world cup . The preparation was critical and rest was very important as well as eating right and having a positive attitude about the race .
We arrived on the Thursday morning and went straight to the track . I met up with my teammates and we decided to ride the course together. The track was certainly different to many other tracks as it had a lot of single track and power up hills and some loose sand. The technical parts were ... well technical and challenging. This course was definitely not for sissies and would separate the men from the boys.
The place we stayed at was great and it was really such an awesome vibe to have most of the team members staying together. We really bonded and got to know each other better. The Friday we rode the track again and later that day we participated in the team relay. A team consists of 4 members . Asleigh , Patrick , Christian and myself were in a team. It was a fun event and we just took it easy as race day dawned on us the next day. We went out that night and fuelled up with good food and discussed race tactics with our coach and the team
Team member and sister , Saffron started her race at 8 so we were all up early to go cheer her on. We arrived and set up the BMC tent and Ellsworth tent along with the banners. All our bikes were on display and our team was definitely the main attraction of the event as almost everyone came to have a look at what was going on over there.
My race started at 9 , along with the u23 , elite and youth woman. 3 laps were required of us . The race was off with a bang and everyone sprinted to try and get into the single track first. Fortunately I was lying 2nd behind Nicole Erasmus . I took over the lead by the rock garden and sprinted away. I was feeling great and had a lot of energy. I also knew that my competition was behind me and that I just had to keep pushing myself if I wanted to win the race. Haley smith was also a very strong rider on the day. I managed to keep the lead all the way until I completed my 3 laps .
I am so happy to say that I took the win for the day. It was my first xco national that I won . Its been quite a journey and I just want to say thank you to my coach Johann Wykerd for making it possible as well as to CSA for putting together such a well organised event. My BMC fourstroke also never seems to disappoint and flew over the technical parts with ease.
But unfortunately all good things come to an end and we had to say our goodbyes... what a successful weekend it has been and thank you to those for all the support!
Until next time guys .. keep pedalling those bicycles :)
